*BREAKING NEWS* | A wanted CIT suspect has been shot dead in a gunfight with KZN police in Maphumulo a short while ago. One police officer was wounded, while another sustained back injuries. Paramedics are currently at the scene and will be transporting both to hospital for further treatment. The team located two men hiding at a safehouse in northern KZN during an intelligence-driven operation last night. They allegedly came under heavy gunfire, during which the member was struck. Guns, stolen vehicles and explosives have been found at the scene, indicating the gang’s possible readiness for an upcoming heist. The outstanding suspect is still being sought. The police team, together with security industry partners, had just returned from a week-long operation in Gauteng on Sunday afternoon when they responded to the information they received regarding the latest suspects. They were in that province following leads on cash-in-transit cases.

*Coedmore Bridge set to open by end of June* Ward 64 residents have just a few more weeks before they can once again drive on the new and improved Coedmore Bridge. THE long-awaited Coedmore Bridge reconstruction is reaching its final phases, with the bridge opening scheduled for the end of June. The reconstruction has been ongoing to repair extensive damage caused by the 2022 floods. Nolwandle Gcaba, Ward 64 community liaison officer, said that consistent progress is being made on the overarching construction areas. “Layer works are ongoing, and earthworks have been done in preparation of the approach slab. Coping work has progressed, and preparation for the installation of handrails has started this week,” she said. Gcaba said that although some secondary work and final snag corrections would continue after the opening, the major construction will be completed so that drivers can use the important route again. “We appreciate the community for its patience and tolerance during this period,” said Gcaba. Coedmore Bridge is an essential link for residents of the Durban South. Drivers have had to make lengthy diversions of 45 minutes or more since it was destroyed. The eThekwini Municipality allocated R48m to restore the 90m, two-lane bridge with pedestrian walkways which was funded through the National Treasury’s Municipal Disaster Response Grant. *Dillon Pillay*✍🏾 https://www.citizen.co.za/southlands-sun/news-headlines/2025/06/11/coedmore-bridge-set-to-open-by-end-of-june/
