🧵| Laylatul Bara’ah / Shab e Baraat | 🧵 The Virtues of the 15th Night of Sha’baan According to the statements of the ‘Ulama The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah looks down at His creation on the middle night of Sha’ban and He forgives all of His creatures, except for an idolater or one filled with malice.” Sha’baan is the 8th month of the Islamic calendar. It’s one of the meritorious months for which we find special guidance in the sunnah of Rasulullah ﷺ. It’s well-established that He ﷺ would fast most of the month of Sha’baan. (Bukhari, Muslim) As for the virtues of the 15th night of Sha’baan, then they are mentioned in multiple ahadith in Musnad Ahmed, Sahih Ibn Hibban, Ibn Majah and other books of ahadith, as well as by the salaf and the scholars of this ummah. It’s important to note that when a Hadith is graded, and said to be sahih, hasan (sound), daeef (weak) or mawdu’ (fabricated), there are often differences of opinion in regards to the grading of a Hadith where some scholars may say a hadith is hasan whilst others say it’s da’eef. Hence, there is a difference of opinion in regards to the ahadith associated with the 15th of Shabaan, there are people that say that some of the ahadith in relation to this night are fabricated whilst others say they are weak. Nevertheless, as stated by Imam Baihaqi رحمه الله, these multiple ahadith do come together to “acquire some strength”, proving that this night does indeed hold merit and virtue. [Al Da’waat al Kabeer 2/147] الدعوات الكبير [١٤٧\٢] According to the 4 madhahib, the mainstream opinion of them all is that engaging in worship on this night is mustahab (recommended). Here are the statements of a few scholars regarding the permissibility and encouragement in performing acts of worship on this night: From the Shawafi’: Imam Shafi’i رحمه الله , mentions that du'as are accepted by Almighty Allah on the night of the 15th of Sha'ban. From the Ahnaaf: Imam Ibn Nujaym Al Hanafi رحمه الله states: "And from the recommended actions is to enliven [through acts of worship] the ten nights of Ramadhan, the nights of the two Eids. The ten nights of Dhul Hijjah and the middle night of Sha'ban." [Al Bahr al Ra'iq 2/56] ‎ومن المندوبات إحياء ليالي العشر من رمضان وليلتي العيدين وليالي عشر ذي الحجة وليلة النصف من شعبان كما وردت به الأحاديث وذكرها في الترغيب والترهيب مفصلة البحر الرائق شرح كنز الدقائق [٥٦\٢] From the Hanabilah: Allamah Ibn Taymiyyah Al Hanbali رحمه الله states: “As for the night of mid-Sha'baan, there are various narrations regarding its virtues, and it has been reported from some of the salaf that they used to pray during it. Therefore, the prayer of a person during it has precedent from the salaf and for it is its evidence, so such a deed can't be criticised.” [Majmoo' Al Fatawa Vol. 23 Pg. 132] ‎وأما ليلة النصف فقد روي في فضلها أحاديث وآثار ونقل عن طائفة من السلف أنهم كانوا يصلون فيها فصلاة الرجل فيها وحده قد تقدمه فيه سلف وله فيه حجة فلا ينكر مثل هذا مجموع الفتاوى [١٣٢\٢٣] From the Malikiyyah: Imam Al Mawwaq Al Maliki رحمه الله states: “It’s been encouraged to fast in the month of Shaʿbān, and it’s been said that deeds are raised [to Allah] during it. Fasting on the 15th day of it and standing [in prayer] on that night have also been encouraged.” Al Taj Wal Iklil Li Mukhtasaril Khalil [3/319] ‎قال وقد رغب في صيام شعبان وقيل فيه ترفع الأعمال. ورغب في صيام يوم نصفهوقيام تلك الليلة قيل ورغب أيضا [التاج والإكليل لمختصر خليل ٣/٣١٩] So let’s make the most of this night and enliven it with individual acts of worship so that Allah may bless us and accept our du’as, and so that we may instil good habits within ourselves for Ramadan. May Allah accept all of our ‘ibadah. Ameen. @1_AbuHurairah
