🧵| What is Tawbah? |🧵 Tawbah (repentance) in linguistic terms means returning. It is said tāba, anāba, āba—all meaning “to return.” Thus, the one who repents to Allah is returning from one state to another: from blameworthy traits to praiseworthy ones, from what Allah has forbidden to what He has commanded, from disobedience to obedience, from what Allah dislikes to what pleases Him. It is a return from opposites to the means of love and closeness, a return to Him after separation, and to His obedience after defiance. So whoever turns away from disobedience out of fear of Allah’s punishment is a تَائِب (one who repents). Whoever turns away out of shame and modesty before Allah is a مُنِيْب (one who constantly turns to Him). And whoever turns away (from disobedience) out of reverence for Allah’s majesty and grandeur is an أَوَّاب (one who frequently repents).
