🌕Ramaḍhān Benefits
Question: Is there a specific supplication reported from the Prophet ﷺ for when one sees the new moon? And is it permissible for someone who only hears about the sighting to recite this supplication even if they have not seen the moon?
Sheikh ’Uthaymeen raḥimahullāh answered:
Yes, the supplication is:
((الله أكبر، اللهم أهله علينا باليمن والإيمان، والسلامة والإسلام، والتوفيق لما تحبه وترضاه، ربي وربك الله، هلال خير ورشد))
"Allāhu Akbar. O Allah, let it appear over us with blessings and faith, safety and Islam, and guidance to what You love and are pleased with. My Lord and your Lord is Allāh. A crescent that bring about goodness and righteousness."
There are two hadiths from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding this, though they contain some slight weakness. The apparent meaning of the ḥadīth indicates that this supplication should only be recited upon actually sighting the new moon. As for someone who only hears about the sighting without seeing it, it is not prescribed for them to say this supplication.
