Consumption Slowdown:
Where Is the Money Going?
Around 45 crore people are expected to visit the Mahakumbh.
Many are also traveling to Ayodhya and Kashi.
Let’s do some simple math:
•If each visitor spends an average of ₹1,000, total spending = ₹45,000 crore
•If each visitor spends an average of ₹10,000, total spending = ₹4,50,000 crore
•If each visitor spends an average of ₹35,000, total spending = ₹15,75,000 crore
For context:
•Total sales of HUL = ~₹60,000 crore
•Total sales of all FMCG companies = ~₹15,00,000 crore
This raises a key question—if this massive spending is happening elsewhere, how much is left for FMCG?
With increased allocation towards travel, lodging, food services, and religious tourism, FMCG volume growth could remain sluggish despite price hikes.
The shift in spending patterns might explain why discretionary spending on packaged goods is under pressure.
Sectors benefiting? Travel, hotels, QSRs, and experience-driven businesses.
A slowdown in consumption isn’t always about lack of money—sometimes, it’s about where that money is going.
