Toxic or abusive relationships can significantly worsen mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression and low self-esteem. Research by Whisman (2007) underscores that relationship distress is strongly linked to both the onset and severity of mental health challenges. Emotional abuse, in particular, has been shown to cause long-term psychological trauma.
The relationship between mental health and the quality of relationships is bidirectional. Mental health influences the quality of relationships, and the quality of relationships, in turn, affects mental health. This interconnectedness means that improving one area can positively impact the other, creating a cycle of mutual benefit.
Healthy relationships, self-love, and strong social support are vital components of mental health. However, these elements must be nurtured alongside self-care and professional guidance to ensure overall well-being.
