Asking for help is frequently viewed as a sign of weakness, yet it is a sign of strength. It demonstrates self-awareness, courage, and the will to learn and improve. Asking for support can ease the pressure of carrying emotional weight alone, reducing tension and encouraging a sense of togetherness. #Ndinewe #MenFeel

Mental health support does not always have to come exclusively from a clinic. Sometimes, the most powerful solutions are rooted in the culture and traditions we have had all along. Culturally resonant innovations can make support more accessible and meaningful, complementing professional clinical help. For instance, communal problem-solving circles create a safe space for men to share struggles and find solutions together, leveraging the power of collective wisdom. Creative expression, like junk sculpture or mbira music therapy, can offer men a way to process emotions without words. Even farming cooperatives (mushandirapamwe) can become therapeutic, blending hard work with camaraderie and purpose. Another powerful approach is blending tradition with modern therapy, as in Friendship Bench, where grandmothers, trusted pillars of wisdom, provide counseling that feels natural, not clinical. It is also however important that individuals still have access to and guidance from professionals. #Ndinewe #MenFeel

According to a 2022 report by the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum and the Zimbabwe Mental Health Investment Case (2021), mental health remains chronically underfunded and deprioritized especially within correctional services. Prisoners with mental health conditions are often left untreated, misdiagnosed or put into solitary confinement rather than receiving psychiatric evaluation/therapy. In Zimbabwe, only three forensic psychiatric units serve the entire prison population. This neglect not only violates rights of incarcerated individuals but also poses broader risks to public safety and rehabilitation. Without adequate mental health intervention, prisoners are more likely to reoffend, experience worsening conditions or die by suicide. Decentralizing forensic mental health care is a necessity. Equipping regional prisons with psychiatric support, training correctional officers in mental health first aid and ensuring access to medication can begin to close this gap. Mental health is a human right even behind bars. #Ndinewe #MenFeel

We wish and hope to leverage mobile technology to reach men where they are, using innovations like SMS-based CBT exercises to help them work through their struggles in a convenient way. By doing so, we can bridge the gap in mental health care and support men in building resilience and wellbeing. #Ndinewe #MenFeel

There is a misconception that marriage will fix a manβs struggles, but the reality is starkly different. Men could be told to get a wife, provide and all will be well. But marriage is not a magic solution for stress, depression or unhealed trauma. Ignoring mental health under the weight of expectations to always be strong, to provide no matter what, can lead to broken relationships, substance abuse or even violence. The pressure to man up and suppress emotions does not make struggles disappear; it magnifies them. Instead of assuming marriage or success will heal pain, we need to prioritize safe spaces for men to speak openly, seek help and address mental health without shame. #Ndinewe #MenFeel
