Kathy Bates is in the midst of a career renaissance.
Just before signing on to CBS’s ‘Matlock’ at the top of 2023, the Academy Award winner felt “invisible,” maybe even done with acting. Opportunities were dwindling. She wondered if she should sell her house and leave LA. But the series soon evolved into a hell of a showcase for Bates—the actor, long known for her tremendous range, gets to run the gamut.
When the series premiered, Bates said that ‘Matlock’ would be her “last dance,” which resulted in an outpouring of public affection. “It’s the affirmation of a career that hasn’t always been up here with the A-team going to Ibiza or whatever, you know?” she tells VF’s David Canfield.
For VF’s June issue, the legendary actor reflects on her wide-ranging career; how Hollywood has treated her appearance (“You’re not Michelle Pfeiffer”); and whether ‘Matlock’ really will be her swan song.
