*TEAM FROM CONSULATE OF BRAZIL IN LAGOS PAYS COURTESY VISIT TO THE VICE-CHANCELLOR* On Wednesday, 4th June 2025, a three-man team from the Consulate of Brazil in Lagos paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, at the conference room on the 6th floor, Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, LASU, Ojo Campus, Lagos. A three-man team was led to the campus by the Acting Consul General, Mr Celso de Arruda França, who noted that the purpose of the visit was to observe, learn, take notes, and meet with students in order to gather reports that would be presented to the Brazilian government for the enhancement of their academic mobility programme. His words, "Lagos State University being a leading research institution and with the Lagos State University Centre for Afrobrazilian Studies (LASUCAS) functioning here, has an important role to play in bilateral mechanisms.” The Acting Consul General added that "There is a need to emphasise the stories of the slave trade, and there is a demand in Brazil to further research the cultural links between Africa and Brazil." In her response, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, who was ably represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Oseni Afisi, appreciated the Consul General for deeming it fit to visit Lagos State University especially because of the strategic importance of LASUCAS in the study of history and culture of Africa and Brazil. The Vice-Chancellor noted that it is important for everyone to have adequate knowledge and understanding of slavery, colonialism, and the plight of Africans who were taken from the shores of Africa to various plantations. “If we do not understand our past, it will be difficult for us to understand our present and for us to forge ahead in the future.” Professor Olatunji-Bello stated that the visit was significant, as it would enrich the work being done and hoped that the relationship will continue to grow in leaps and bounds. The Deputy Registrar (Academic Staff Establishment) Mr Samuel Otesanya, who represented the Registrar, gave the vote of thanks. Other members on the visitiing team included: the Vice Consul General, Mr Augusto Rosa Amorim, and the Education/Cultural Attaché, Mr Adeniran Olusola Arimoro. The meeting had in attendance the representative of the Bursar, Mr Kunle Odunlami (Deputy Bursar); the Director, Lagos State University Centre for Afro-brazilian Studies (LASUCAS), Profesor Tayo Ajayi; the Dean, Postgraduate School, Professor Ibrahim Olateju; the Dean, Faculty of Science, Professor Moses Akanbi; the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor Olufemi Lawal; the Dean, Faculty of Education, Professor Gbenga Akindoju; and the Sub-Dean, Postgraduate School, Professor Olanrewaju Ajiboye. The Assistant Director, LASUCAS, Dr Sunday Bamisile; the Administrative Secretary, LASUCAS, Dr (Mrs) Funmilola Opaleye; members of staff in the Vice-Chancellor’s Office and Centre for Information and Public Relations (CIPR) were also in attendance.
