This month’s lineup represents a dynamic cross-section of talent across athletics, football, and basketball — spotlighting African athletes who have delivered world-class performances and broken historic records on the international stage.
From new national records to groundbreaking achievements in global competitions, the May 2025 nominees exemplify excellence, resilience, and the growing dominance of African athletes in world sports.

🇬🇭 *Abdul-Rasheed Saminu* (Ghana) – Track & Field – 100m Sprint
Abdul-Rasheed Saminu clocked a world-leading 9.86 seconds in the 100 meters at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships in Florida, smashing Ghana’s national record and surpassing the previous mark held by Benjamin Azamati (9.90s). Saminu’s performance ranks him among the top five fastest African sprinters of all time and has officially qualified him for the upcoming World Championships, cementing his place in global sprinting history.
🇨🇲 *Pascal Siakam* (Cameroon) – Basketball – Indiana Pacers, NBA
Cameroonian NBA star Pascal Siakam led the Indiana Pacers to a historic Eastern Conference Finals victory over the New York Knicks. Siakam’s commanding performances throughout the series earned him the Eastern Conference Finals MVP, making him the only African player to achieve this feat in 2025. His leadership was instrumental in sending the Pacers to their first NBA Finals in over two decades.
🇳🇬 *Victor Osimhen* (Nigeria) – Football – Galatasaray
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen delivered a legendary display in the Turkish Cup final, scoring two goals to lead Galatasaray to a dominant 3–0 win over Trabzonspor. Osimhen concluded the campaign with 35 goals, becoming the club’s highest-scoring foreign player in a single season and securing his first major domestic title with the Turkish giants.
🇲🇦 *Achraf Hakimi* (Morocco) – Football – Paris Saint-Germain
Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi was named the Marc-Vivien Foé Award winner as the best African player in France’s Ligue 1. Hakimi crowned his stellar season by scoring the opening goal in Paris Saint-Germain’s 5–0 UEFA Champions League Final victory over Inter Milan—marking PSG’s first-ever UCL triumph and furthering his reputation as one of the world’s top defenders.
🇪🇬 *Mohamed Salah* (Egypt) – Football – Liverpool FC
Egyptian icon Mohamed Salah made history yet again, winning the Premier League Golden Boot, Playmaker of the Season, and Player of the Season awards. Salah finished the 2024/25 season with 29 goals and 18 assists — totaling 47 goal involvements, the highest ever recorded in a 38-game Premier League campaign. He is now tied with Thierry Henry for the most Golden Boot wins (4) and is the only player to complete the Golden Boot-Playmaker double twice.
