For over forty years, Mhofu was not just an employee at the Zimbabwean Embassy in London. He was the heartbeat of the Zimbabwe House, the keeper of our stories, and the unspoken diplomat of warmth, wisdom, and laughter. Mhofu could make anyone laugh — even if it was your first time meeting him. His humour was effortless, disarming, and never failed. Always smiling, always gentle, he could disagree with you or correct you with such grace that you’d hardly notice — and somehow, you’d leave the conversation feeling even closer to him. He played an instrumental role in establishing the Sanganayi Meeting Place, which is located in the basement of Zimbabwe House. Sanganayi Meeting Place is a cultural haven, where Zimbabwean cuisine met each and every Friday evening for exposure and experience of music, dance, and laughter, while the deep ache of homesickness softened through encountering and or engaging with familiar voices. Sanganayi wasn’t just a venue; it was a feeling — of being seen, embraced, and remembered. It became the unofficial embassy of many of the Zimbabwean souls in the UK, and Mhofu was its most gracious host. A true cultural nationalist, Mhofu understood that identity is carried in small things — in sadza and mbira, in conversation and kindness. At the Embassy, he was everyone’s helper, especially those seeking to renew travel documents, find their footing as students or workers, or simply looking for someone who understood and cared. He always had time for everyone. Aboveall, he always had answers and solutions desperately needed by each and every individual who dared to approach and involve him. Approachable, humble, and brimming with integrity, Just Mhofu had an uncanny way of making you feel at home — even if you were thousands of miles away from it. We will miss his laugh, his stories, and the quiet dignity with which he carried generations of Zimbabweans through their journeys. Rest in peace, Mhofu. You’ve earned it — and we’ll carry your legacy with every step we take.
