*THE RESONANT TONES OF TRADITION: BONIFACE PHIRI`S STORY* *Introduction* The resonant tones of the mbira echo throughout Boniface Phiri`s music, embodying his profound connection to Zimbabwean traditions and cultural heritage. He is also formerly Boniface Dhaka and was born on September 10, 1974, on a farm west of Kadoma, Zimbabwe. Boniface`s life has been intricately entwined with the rhythms of his ancestry. Guided by Sekuru Mushore, a venerated Spirit Medium from Nharira Hills, Boniface`s artistry is enriched by spiritual wisdom and cultural depth. A staunch adherent of the Ten Commandments of the Bible, Boniface exemplifies a harmonious blend of spirituality and musicality. As a master mbira player and skilled percussionist, he demonstrates exceptional versatility across musical instruments, with the sole exception of horn instruments. His artistry weaves together the traditional sounds of Zimbabwean instruments, crafting a distinctive musical identity that bridges the past and present, while inspiring a new generation of music enthusiasts. *Early Life* Music was woven into the fabric of Boniface Phiri`s life from a tender age. At just four years old, his maternal grandfather, a respected blacksmith and _*Kalimba music*_ virtuoso, ignited his passion for music. As Boniface grew, his grandfather's legacy continued to inspire him, shaping his musical identity. After his grandfather`s passing, his uncle Solomon Dhaka, who was a gifted banjo player, stepped in to nurture his talents. He provided Boniface with tin drums, fueling his creativity, and introduced him to Uncle Never Zuze, a multifaceted artist and skilled craftsman. Bornface`s life journey began with his birth to N`onya Agnes Dhaka and Boniface Phiri, initially known as Bornface Dhaka. Spending his formative years with his mother, he later reunited with his father in 1985, adopting the surname Phiri and embarking on a lifelong musical exploration. Nurtured by a rich cultural heritage and supportive family, Boniface’s musical talents blossomed under the profound influence of his grandmother, the late Eretina Dhaka, who introduced him to traditional songs and imparted valuable life lessons on behaviour, kingship, peace, harmony, and love before passing away in 2024 aged 116 years. Championing peace, love, and harmony, Bornface continues to inspire, reflecting the lasting impact of his grandmother`s teachings. *Education* Boniface attended Mayflower Primary School and Cam and Motor Primary School in Kadoma, where he distinguished himself as a member of the junior choir by grade 4. His musical talents continued to flourish in secondary school, leading him to join the Vijana Sounds, a military band, after completing his studies. *Journey Into Mbira Music* Boniface`s journey into mbira music was significantly influenced by his uncle Never Zuze, with whom he recorded one of his first mbira albums, Hangaiwa and The Gatingo Bells. This marked a turning point in his life, solidifying his passion for mbira music. He played with various bands, including The Energy Sounds and Hohodza Hot Band, and also collaborated with notable musicians like Oliver Mtukudzi. His work with Mbira DzeNharira (Samaita Mukono, Binga) and a subgroup called Matanda Masairira led to international recognition, albeit without their knowledge or consent at the time. *Cultural Exchange and International Recognition* In 2005, Boniface participated in a Cultural Exchange Program with The Vembe Cultural Ensemble in South Africa, further broadening his musical horizons. His music is available on platforms like YouTube, where he can be found under the name Bonanza Phiri, featuring tracks such as Kumakura Dande, Waba Nyama, and Usaidenha Hondo (a song promoting peace and stability). *Message to All Mbira Players* Boniface`s heartfelt message to cultural musicians underscores the importance of preserving and celebrating their heritage through the powerful medium of music. He urges artists to remain steadfast in their cultural identity and resist the allure of fleeting trends in digital sounds. For Boniface, music is not merely a craft but an ongoing journey — one he passionately invites others to embark upon. With a poetic spirit, he envisions a future where the mbira breathes life into tradition, healing hearts and evoking blessings, such as the rains that nourish the land. Through the mbira, cultural identity is reaffirmed, and people find solace and renewal, weaving a legacy of resilience and hope. *Spiritual Message from Bornface: Power of African Heritage* "I urge the authorities in government to consider my plea to bring back the remains of our revered Chiefs, including *Mbuya Nehanda and other top spiritual leaders,* currently housed in museums in the United Kingdom, as a crucial step towards restoring our cultural heritage. This act also would be promoting healing and unity among our people, and fostering greater understanding and cooperation between nations. *Discography* Some notable works include: • *Hangaiwa:* The Gatingo Bells” (with Uncle Never Zuze) • *Mutemwa Dzinobva Ropa* (with Sydney Nyandoro and Dande Boys) • *Tracks available on YouTube, such as “Kumakura Dande,” “Waba Nyama,” “Usandiseka (Mapiano with Mbira),” and “Usaidenha Hondo.*” *Conclusion* Boniface Phiri`s life and career are a testament to the power of music and cultural heritage. With a vision to take the mbira and marimba to the world, Boniface continues to innovate while staying rooted in his traditions. His work serves as an inspiration to musicians and cultural preservationists alike, showcasing the enduring appeal and significance of Zimbabwean music.
