*Kwekwe News Bulletin* - In a significant ruling, the Shurugwi Magistrates' Court has handed down a 10-year prison sentence to Anotidaishe Poshayi, 28, for violating the Electricity Act. This law prohibits the cutting, damaging, or tampering with any equipment used for generating or transmitting electricity.
The incident occurred on October 25, 2024, around 2:00 AM, when Poshayi and three accomplices—Shelton Mufiri, Wilbert Gwauya, and Tiritose Mufiri, who remain at large—attempted to steal copper cables from a power line near a community hall in Railway Block, Shurugwi. Armed with a bolt cutter and pliers, they managed to sever two sections of cable measuring 70 meters and 50 meters, both 50mm in diameter.
While on patrol, security guards Simbarashe Zimunhu and Tatenda Gundani received a tip-off about suspicious activity near the community hall. Upon investigating, they caught the thieves in the act. The group fled, abandoning the cables, a yellow bolt cutter, and a green pair of pliers. During the escape, one accomplice struck Zimunhu on the head with an unknown object.
Poshayi was apprehended, and the stolen copper cables, weighing 39.85 kg and valued at approximately $5,890, were recovered and taken to the police station, where a formal report was filed.
