We need to re-articulate Indian nationalism, a nationalism that is deep yet non-jingoistic, plural yet rooted, self-affirming yet honest. For this we must face difficult questions: Is India merely a political unit or a successor to a civilisation? Can we take pride in India without inventing lies, without dissimulation? Can we affirm loyalty to India without suppressing other identities — region, religion, humanity? Fact is that critics of RSS style pseudo-nationalism still struggle to answer these. We must recreate, rearticulate and then regain the nationalism of the freedom struggle, a nationalism that we allowed to be stoned. This project is not optional. Its success is the precondition for the very survival of India.
