PhD opportunity with Jillian Anable and I: 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐭𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: 𝐔𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐅𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 📅 Deadline is 𝟏𝟑𝐭𝐡 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 Our latest research in Nature Energy ( https://lnkd.in/erDHtc6D ) reveals that while long-distance trips (>50 miles one way) make up less than 3% of all UK passenger trips, they account for 60% of miles travelled and 70% of emissions. 𝘠𝘦𝘵, 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘫𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘺𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴 𝘢 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦—existing surveys (e.g., the National Travel Survey and International Passenger Survey) don’t fully capture both infrequent long-distance and daily/weekly travel patterns. This 𝐄𝐏𝐒𝐑𝐂 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐡𝐃 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 will bridge that gap by applying advanced statistical/data science techniques to fuse multiple datasets at a household level, enabling a deeper analysis of long-distance travel behaviours, emissions, and decarbonisation potential.
