From a Gangster to a scholar of Hadith‼️👇 Al-Qanabi used to drink wine and accompany juveniles (bandits and alcoholics). One day,he invited them to drink wine, and he sat at the door waiting for them. Shu'bah bin Al-Hajjaj (the Ameer ul Momineen in Hadith) passed by on his donkey while the people behind him were rushing. He said: Who is this? It was said "Shu'bah". He said: And who is Shu'bah? They said Muhaddith So he stood up to him wearing a red garment and said to him, "narrate to me." He said to him: You are not from the people of Hadith, so that I narrate to you. So he took out a knife and said, "Narrate to me or I will stab you?" He said to him: Mansour told us on the authority of Rib’i bin Harash on the authority of Abu Masoud al-Badri who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Among the words that people learned from the earlier Prophets are: ‘If you feel no shame, then do as you wish. Al-Qa’nabi became ashamed , threw down his knife, and returned to his house. So he got up and took all the drink he had and poured it out. He asked, "Who is the most knowledgeable of people?" They said to him : Malik So he went to Madinah and studied with Malik bin Anas and memorized the Muwatta from him. Then he returned to Basra and asked about Shu'bah, and they told him he had died. Al-Qa'nabi only narrated this hadith on the authority of Shu'bah. On the authority of Al-Qa’nabi, on the authority of Shu’bah, on the authority of Mansour, on the authority of Rib’i Bin Harash, on the authority of Abi Masoud Al-Badri, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Among the words that people learned from the earlier Prophets are: ‘If you feel no shame, then do as you wish. Al-Qa’nabi became an Imam in jurisprudence and Hadith, and he was an ascetic and a virtuous worshipper. And he is most trustworthy of those who narrated Al-Muwatta’. Ali bin Al-Madini said, on the authority of his father, He said: None of the narrators of (Al-Muwatta') are superior to Al-Qa'nabi.
