*SLEEP DEPRIVATION*
Sleep deprivation occurs when you don’t get enough sleep, both in duration and quality to support optimal function.
Adults typically need 7-9 hours of sleep every night.
Occasionally falling short might not be dangerous, but chronic sleep deprivation can turn fatal.
HOW DOES THE BODY REACT TO LACK OF SLEEP?
During sleep, the body repairs tissues, consolidates memories and regulates hormones.
Without sleep:
- Stress hormone (cortisol) rises, which reduces insulin sensitivity.
- There is reduced production of white blood cells which leads to a weak immune system.
