In 2025 alone, the excessive militarization of this region has led to a grave escalation of violence, including enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, targeted assassinations by state-backed death squads, and custodial torture. Victims include civilians, students, government employees, and journalists, many of whom were forcibly abducted from their homes, only for their mutilated bodies to be discovered days or weeks later. This deliberate campaign of terror, intimidation, and repression points to a coordinated strategy of Baloch genocide and raises serious concerns under international human rights and humanitarian law. 2. Over the past decade, Awaran has remained one of the most heavily militarized and besieged regions in Balochistan. Military operations have turned the entire district into a zone of surveillance, restriction, and impunity. Civilian movement is severely controlled. Entry into the district is reportedly prohibited without express approval by military checkpoints, and local residents live under an undeclared curfew after dusk. Access to essential services, including medical emergencies, requires prior approval from military cantonments. This has placed the lives and wellbeing of residents at the mercy of army personnel, who reportedly exercise unchecked power over the population. 3. In the first half of 2025 alone, at least 46 individuals have reportedly been forcibly disappeared from Awaran, with their whereabouts remaining unknown. In addition, 24 individuals have been extrajudicially killedโ€”either in military custody, by state-backed death squads, or in so-called โ€œencounterโ€ operations by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD). These numbers are likely higher, as poor communication infrastructure, widespread fear, and restrictions on information flow prevent timely or complete reporting. Particularly alarming is the emerging pattern of custodial killings. Individuals are often summoned to military camps for interrogation and later found dead, with their bodies recovered in or near their hometowns. Many of these killings follow a disturbingly similar sequence: the victim is abducted, held incommunicado, and then killedโ€”without due process or legal accountability. 4. 2025 All victims were civilians from Awaran district, Balochistan. The use of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial executions, and state-sanctioned impunity represent a grave breach of Pakistanโ€™s international obligations. These acts also severely undermine any claim of civilian governance and rule of law in Balochistan. 6. ๐™๐™ง๐™œ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ ๐˜ฟ๐™š๐™ข๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™๐™จ ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™๐™š๐™˜๐™ค๐™ข๐™ข๐™š๐™ฃ๐™™๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™จ We urgently call on: โ€ข The United Nations Special Procedures, particularly the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, the Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions, and the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders, to immediately investigate the deteriorating situation in Balochistan. โ€ข The Government of Pakistan to immediately cease all enforced disappearances, dismantle state-sponsored death squads, and ensure access to legal remedies and independent investigations into all reported killings; โ€ข International human rights organizations and diplomatic actors to exert pressure on the state of Pakistan to comply with its human rights obligations and ensure accountability for violations. #stopbalochgenocide #releasebycleaders
