A man rejected a woman he loved because she refused marriage and suggested an illicit relationship. Ibn al Jawzi and al Kharaiti narrated: A devoted man fell in love with a woman from Basra. He sent her a marriage proposal, but she refused, saying: "If you want something else (I.e fornication etc) beside marriage, I will do it." He responded: "Glory to Allah! O woman, I invite you to what is correct and lawful free of blame and sin. yet you invite me to what benefits neither you nor me!" She said: "I have stated my position. If you accept it, come forward; if not, withdraw." When she realized he adamantly refused immorality, she sent: "I submit to whatever you desire." He replied: "Never! I reject one who calls me to disobedience (of Islamic law) while I summon her to obedience!" [Dhamm al Hawa by Ibn Jawzi page 236 , Itilal al-Qulub al-Khara’iti, 1/74]
