From the Commander of the Faithful (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: “The one who travels the farthest is he whose journey is in search of a righteous brother.” [Ghurar Al-Hikam] Narrated by Tha‘labah ibn Maymūn: There were some people with Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him) who were speaking with him. One of them mentioned another man and criticized him and complained about him. So Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him) said to him: “And how could you possibly have your brother in his entirety? And who among men is truly refined?” ⸻ Explanation of key phrases: 1. وَقَعَ فِيهِ – “He criticized him” or “spoke ill of him.” It refers to mentioning his faults, possibly under the pretense of expressing a grievance, as suggested by the following phrase: “and complained about him” (وشكاه). 2. وَ أَنَّى لَكَ بِأَخِيكَ كُلِّهِ – “And how could you possibly have your brother in his entirety?” The phrase “أَنَّى” here conveys the sense of impossibility or improbability. It means: “From where would you get a brother who is perfect in all aspects of brotherhood that you expect no faults from him?” ⸻ 📕 Source: Al-Kāfī al-Sharīf, Volume 2, Page 651. This narration emphasizes tolerance and realistic expectations in relationships, highlighting that no one is without flaws and that brotherhood requires forbearance.
