From Imam Sadiq’s long letter to Mufadhal Ibn Umar “Then I inform you that the religion, and the pillar of the religion, is a man. And that man is certainty (yaqīn), and he is faith (īmān), and he is the Imam of his nation (Ummah) and the people of his time. So whoever knows him, knows Allah. And whoever denies him, denies Allah and His religion. And whoever is ignorant of him, is ignorant of Allah, His religion, His limits, and His laws without that Imam. It is so, for the Ma’rifa of men is the religion of Allah. And true Ma’rifa, in its proper form, is a Ma’rifa grounded in insight, through which the religion of Allah is known, and through which one is led to the Ma’rifa of Allah, so this is the inward, stable Ma’rifa” [Basa’ir Darajaat] ثم انى أخبرك ان الدين واصل الدين هو رجل وذلك الرجل هو اليقين وهو الايمان وهو امام أمته وأهل زمانه فمن عرف عرف الله ومن أنكره أنكر الله ودينه ومن جهله جهل الله ودينه وحدوده وشرايعه بغير ذلك الامام كذلك جرى بان معرفة الرجال دين الله والمعرفة على وجهه معرفة ثابتة على بصيرة يعرف بها دين الله ويوصل بها إلى معرفة الله فهذه المعرفة الباطنة الثابتة بعينها الموجبة حقها المستوجب أهلها عليها الشكر لله التي من عليهم بها من من الله يمن به على من يشاء مع معرفة الظاهرة
