When legendary NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Sr. died in a 2001 Daytona 500 crash, it changed everything across the entire landscape of the sport. And even bigger, it changed everything for Dale’s children, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kelley Earnhardt.
But it wasn’t just personal elements that switched up, it was also business with Dale Earnhardt Inc. (DEI).
The company was a force in NASCAR, with Jr. leading the way in his No. 8 car and having a huge fanbase backing him. However, Jr. left in 2007 and eventually joined Hendrick Motorsports in 2008. Dale Jr.‘s vision was simple, he wanted a piece of the company, but his stepmother Teresa Earnhardt wasn’t fond of that, reportedly saying, “If Dale Jr. doesn’t want to stick around here, we’ll make another Dale Jr.” From there, DEI collapsed and spiraled into irrelevancy.
