Before Pakistan's nuclear tests, the nuclear arena was reserved for global and regional powers. Earlier nuclear states, including India, had economies in trillions or hundreds of billions of dollars in 1998. Pakistan's GDP was $62 billion. It was also economically challenged with over $30 billion foreign debt. US sanctions were certain after the tests. Despite facing economic challenges that were unlike any other prospective nuclear state before it, Pakistan conducted its nuclear tests. The people, entirely aware of the sacrifice that came with it, were full of jubilation. The monopoly of major powers was no more. Pakistan was the first Islamic nuclear state.
