Veteran heavyweight Derek Chisora finds himself at a career crossroads, as unbeaten British contender Fabio Wardley throws down the gauntlet for a high-stakes clash.
Chisora, a fan-favourite known for his relentless fighting style and iron will, has long teased retirement after reaching 50 professional bouts. Now at 49 fights, the 40-year-old Zimbabwe-born Briton faces a crucial decision on whether to pursue one final chapter in the ring—or hang up the gloves.
“I’ve always said 50 fights and I’m done,” Chisora previously remarked. “But in this game, you never really know what’s next.”
One enticing option is a potential shot at the IBF heavyweight title. Chisora is currently the mandatory challenger for the belt, which is in the hands of Daniel Dubois. However, Dubois is expected to face Oleksandr Usyk in a blockbuster undisputed title showdown this July, leaving Chisora's title hopes in limbo.
Meanwhile, rising star Fabio Wardley has stepped into the spotlight, publicly calling out Chisora in hopes of testing himself against one of the division’s most battle-hardened warriors.
“I’ve got massive respect for Derek, but I want that fight,” Wardley said. “He’s shared the ring with the best, and if I’m going to prove I belong at the top, I need to beat someone like him.”
Chisora’s storied career includes memorable battles against the likes of Tyson Fury, Dillian Whyte, Vitali Klitschko, and David Haye. Though he has never held a world title, his resume boasts notable victories over Otto Wallin, Joe Joyce, and Gerald Washington—cementing his status as one of the most durable and respected heavyweights of his era.
Now, with his 50th fight on the horizon and new challenges emerging, Chisora must decide whether to chase glory one last time or step away on his own terms.
“I’ll know when it’s time,” he said recently. “But until then, let’s see what the game has to offer.”
