*Pasuwa’s Malawi labeled ‘Ghost Team’ after failing to score at COSAFA*
BLANTYRE, Malawi — Kalisto Pasuwa’s Flames bowed out of the 2025 Hollywoodbets COSAFA Championship on Tuesday without scoring a single goal, following a 1-0 defeat to Angola that capped a disappointing Group B campaign.
The loss, their second of the tournament, left Malawi with two defeats and one draw — and zero goals to show for their efforts.
A promising first half saw Malawi register one shot on target through Blessings Singini. But the second half followed a familiar pattern, with Angola taking control and scoring just three minutes after the restart through a header by Randy Mteka.
Malawi pushed for a late equalizer in stoppage time, but attempts by Wisdom Mpinganjira, Wongani Lungu and Chikumbutso Salima failed to hit the target.
In a scathing editorial, the Nyasa Times said the Flames "checked out of the tournament with the grace of a ghost — barely seen, never felt, and certainly not heard on the scoreboard.”
“It was passing practice for Angola and panic mode for Malawi,” the paper added.
The three-match campaign included a 1-0 loss to Lesotho, a 0-0 draw with Namibia and the latest defeat to Angola.
“Three matches. Zero wins. Zero goals. A masterclass in how not to qualify,” the Nyasa Times wrote.
Pasuwa, a former Zimbabwe national team coach, now faces questions over the team’s direction as the focus shifts to upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Final Group B standings:
Angola – 7 points
Namibia – 5 points
Lesotho – 3 points
Malawi – 1 point
