The sensational claim surfaced during a dramatic session at Chief Mutasa’s community court, where Peter Masvaure, of Bocha, dragged the Makoni family of Honde Valley to answer allegations he says have tormented his family for years. Masvaure told the court that his sister, Lucia Masvaure, had married into the Makoni family but later returned home emotionally distressed, claiming her in-laws had accused her of killing her father-in-law, Erick Makoni. > “My sister was heartbroken. She said they accused her of killing their father. Then her sister-in-law, Monica Makoni, began manifesting, claiming the spirit of the deceased had possessed her and was demanding justice,” Peter Masvaure said. According to Masvaure, Monica alleged during one of these spiritual trances that Erick’s ghost had revealed Lucia poisoned him by lacing sugar with a deadly substance, which he later used in his home-brewed alcohol. > “When we travelled to Honde Valley to address the issue, Monica again went into a trance and claimed their late father’s spirit was inside her. I asked for the spirit to manifest through someone from my own family, for fairness, and it agreed—but that has never happened,” he said. The matter was later escalated to Headman Sanyamandwe, where Monica again appeared allegedly possessed. Masvaure said he challenged the spirit to prove itself by transferring to his daughter—again, it failed to do so. Lucia’s sister, Edna Masvaure, also testified in court, describing years of social isolation and emotional trauma caused by the allegations. > “We have lived under a cloud of shame. Our sister has been treated like a criminal, yet there is no evidence. These accusations have haunted us for decades,” she said. Following these testimonies, Monica—once again under a trance—channeled what she claimed to be Erick Makoni’s spirit. Speaking through her, the spirit directly accused Lucia of murder. > “I was killed by Lucia, my son’s wife, in 1995. I had asked her for sugar to sweeten my chikokiyana (illicit brew). From the moment I used it, my stomach ached terribly. I died soon after,” the spirit declared. “The sugar had strange black and yellow particles. That is what took my life—not the brew.” Chief Mutasa used the platform to caution the community about the dangers of chikokiyana, a potent and illegal home-brewed alcohol. > “This concoction is essentially ethanol. Some mix it with sugar, fertiliser, or wild plant extracts. Taken in excess, it can rupture your intestines and kill you,” the chief warned. “But, Erick, are you certain it was the sugar and not the brew that killed you?” The spirit, still speaking through Monica, remained adamant: > “It was the sugar. That’s what killed me.” Chief Mutasa urged the spirit to cease tormenting the Makoni family unless it could directly confront the Masvaure family, if they were indeed responsible for Erick’s death. Meanwhile, Robert Makoni, Lucia’s husband and son of the deceased, contested the spirit’s claims, saying he believed his siblings were behind the so-called manifestations—not his late father. > “I don’t believe that’s my father speaking. I believe this is being staged by my siblings,” he argued. The matter remains unresolved, steeped in grief, accusations, and supernatural claims—leaving two families trapped in a bitter standoff between tradition, spirit possession, and a search for justice.
