Mzembi’s Alleged Return Sparks Speculation Mzembi dominated headlines on Wednesday, 11 June 2025, after allegations surfaced that he had quietly returned to Zimbabwe for the first time since fleeing the country in 2018. He reportedly travelled under the radar and met the President, sparking fierce online debate. The former tourism minister left Zimbabwe while out on bail for corruption charges, citing the need for cancer treatment in South Africa. After Mugabe’s ouster in a 2017 military coup, Mzembi claimed he was a target of political persecution and eventually settled in Zambia. Charamba Rubbishes Claims of Mzembi-Mnangagwa Meeting News of his alleged return and supposed meeting with Mnangagwa didn’t sit well with some Zimbabweans on social media, with many slamming Mzembi for trying to crawl back into Zanu-PF. Some accused him of abandoning the opposition cause, while others questioned the President’s judgment if the meeting did happen. On Friday, 13 June, Charamba took to X (formerly Twitter) to shoot down the rumour, saying no such meeting had taken place. He also criticised the outrage directed at Mzembi, calling it a sign of how deep the politics of hate and division run in Zimbabwe. “THE SPIRITED ATTACK ON THIS MAN FOR A NEVER-NEVER ENCOUNTER SHOWS HOW VESTED THE POLITICS OF DIVISION ARE IN OUR BODY-POLITIC AND PSYCHE!!! Not that the attacks matter!!!!!” Charamba posted. Mixed Reactions from the Public While some X users praised Mzembi for staying calm amid the storm, others felt even the rumour of such a meeting reflected poorly on the President, especially since Mzembi still has unresolved criminal charges. Here are some of the comments: @TChinoera: This man had pending cases, and as a suspect to be meeting the State President makes bad taste in the mouth. @DanfordMachona: We are waiting to see what will happen to the alleged offences @LessonNc: When you always say DUNUNU, you think it’s unity? @Dhuve6: Such attacks show that even lawyers are selective on constitutional rights – it’s every Zimbabwean’s right to choose a political party they associate with. Some opposition party leaders are so gullible to assume that when one is not in the ruling party, he is in their party. @DavidZindi3: Apera uyo. Mari dzekuba dzapera. Shame stereki. Soon Kasukuwere and Moyo will follow suit 🤣🤣🤣
