The Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) has issued a strong call for stricter enforcement of road safety laws to protect commuters, following a deadly collision involving a Stallion Cruise bus and a Kempstone truck.
The tragic accident, which occurred along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway, claimed three lives and left 18 others injured, sending shockwaves across the country and reigniting concerns over road safety.
In a statement, PAZ National Coordinator Tafadzwa Goliati lamented the continued loss of life on Zimbabwe’s roads and criticised the lack of adequate enforcement mechanisms.
“We are deeply saddened by this avoidable tragedy. The continued loss of life on our roads is a direct reflection of weak enforcement.
“We urge the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Vehicle Inspection Department to fully implement IS 118 of 2023 and invest in proper patrol vehicles and technology,” said Goliati.
The crash has sparked fresh debate about the safety of Zimbabwe’s public transport system, with many pointing to chronic issues such as overloaded buses, exhausted drivers, and poor regulatory oversight.
Goliati stressed that bus operators must also be held accountable.
“We are urging all our member operators to prioritize safety, ensure their drivers are well-trained, and strictly comply with road regulations,” he said.
PAZ also threw its weight behind the police's recent call for greater caution and responsibility on the country’s highways, especially ahead of the busy mid-year travel season.
This latest tragedy adds to a grim tally of road fatalities.
