12/06/2025, 𝓼𝓮𝓪𝓯𝓪𝓻𝓮𝓻'𝓼 𝓾𝓹𝓭𝓪𝓽𝓮 The general cargo vessel Hein ran aground and became partially submerged off the southern coast of Monas Island in Chaguaramas, Trinidad and Tobago, on 11th June. The incident occurred while the vessel was en route to Kingstown, St Vincent Grenadines, carrying bricks. A sudden shift in cargo caused the vessel to list to port, compromising its stability. No injuries were reported in the incident. To avert capsizing after a cargo shift, the crew crew intentionally grounded the vessel. The hull reportedly remained intact; however, hydrocarbons have begun leaking from the bilge into the Gulf of Paria and Chaguaramas basin raising serious environmental concerns. Authorities have confirmed that efforts are underway to refloat Hein. Meanwhile, the environmental organization Fishermen and Friends of the Sea has called for immediate action.
