Job Title: Boarding Mistress

Reports to: PRINCIPAL/FAO
Job Purpose:
The Boarding Mistress is responsible for the welfare, supervision, and pastoral care of students
residing in the boarding house. She ensures a safe, supportive, and structured environment that
promotes academic progress, personal development, and well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Pastoral Care & Student Welfare
• Act as a primary caregiver, offering emotional support and guidance to boarders.
• Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful boarding community.
• Monitor students’ physical and mental well-being, addressing concerns promptly.
• Maintain open communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress and welfare.
2. Supervision & Discipline
• Ensure students adhere to boarding rules, routines, and school policies, wearing appropriate school uniform when going to school, church or any school outings.
• Accompany students to school, church and school outings.
• Oversee daily routines, including wake-up, meals, study hours, and bedtime.
• Manage disciplinary issues fairly and consistently, reporting serious concerns to senior staff.
• Ensures all students partake in meals at prescribed times and ensures that dining etiquette is
followed.
• Ensure that all cutlery is put in the right containers after meals.
• To ensure that house prefects carry out their duties accordingly.
3. Academic & Personal Development Support
• Encourage a structured study environment and assist students with academic needs.
• Organise extracurricular activities, weekend programs, and social events together with the club patrons/teachers.
• Promote life skills, independence, and responsible behaviour.
4. Health & Safety
• Administer first aid (if qualified) and manage medical emergencies in liaison with school health
staff.
• Ensure the boarding house is clean, secure, and well-maintained.
• Conduct regular safety checks, roll calls in the morning and evening, ensuring those who are sick
receive medical attention.
• Reports all sick students to the Principal so that they are taken to the Hospital or the dispensary if
necessary.
5. Administrative Duties
• Maintain accurate records (attendance, incidents, health logs).
• Manage boarding budgets and supplies, including kitchen supplies.
• Attend staff meetings and training sessions.
• Oversee the work of the chefs, including issuing of foodstuffs and reporting any issues to the
FAO.
Person Specification:
Education: Diploma or relevant qualification in Early childhood development, counselling, nursing or hospitality.
Experience: Previous work in boarding schools, youth work, or pastoral care preferred.
Skills:
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Patience, empathy, and resilience.
• Ability to enforce rules while building trust.
Other: Willingness to reside on-site and work flexible hours (evenings/weekends).
