BFU's investigation into the June 10, 2024, plane crash that killed Malawi’s Vice-President Saulos Chilima and eight others has found that the accident was caused by poor flight planning, bad weather decisions, and a lack of situational awareness.
The military aircraft, flying under visual rules, entered clouds and crashed into a hillside in Nthungwa Forest.
The report says pilots did not get a proper weather briefing, flew too low in mountainous terrain, and lacked real-time radar support.
It has also ruled out technical faults, but indicates that key safety systems were either outdated or underused.
