In 2024, there were 61 interstate conflicts worldwide, including 11 full-scale wars — more than in any year since World War II.
This is stated in a study by Swedish researchers published in the Journal of Peace Research.
The 11 full-scale wars included the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Israeli attacks on Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, the fight against a terrorist organization in Nigeria, and clashes in Ethiopia’s Tigray region.
The number of conflicts has been steadily increasing: 56 were recorded in 2022, 59 in 2023.
“2024 was the fourth most violent year since the 1994 Rwandan genocide,” said Sean Davis, senior analyst at the Uppsala Conflict Data Program.
