EU to Invest €241 Billion in Nuclear Energy by 2050 — European Commission Forecast
According to a new projection by the European Commission, EU member states will need to invest approximately €241 billion in nuclear energy by 2050 to meet long-term energy security and decarbonization goals.
The forecast is outlined in the Commission’s Illustrative Nuclear Programme report (PINC), published on the official EU website.
“Plans for the development of nuclear energy in EU member states will require significant investments totaling around €241 billion by 2050, both for the lifetime extension of existing reactors and the construction of new large-scale reactors,” the report states.
In addition to traditional nuclear infrastructure, further investments will be needed for the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) and to support the long-term prospects of nuclear fusion technology.
