Rare Earth Metals: Strategic Minerals Powering Modern Tech
Rare earth elements (REEs), vital for electronics, defence, and energy tech, are controlled largely by China, which holds 44 million metric tonnes in reserves and dominates global production. India, though rich in reserves (6.9 MMT), lags in output (2,900 MT). Used in devices from smartphones to fighter jets, REEs are hard to extract and often mixed with radioactive materials, making mining both critical and risky.
