In many communities, #menstruation is still treated as taboo. Girls learn to hide their periods, and not celebrate the strength of their bodies. Many miss school every month. Others suffer infections due to lack of access to clean menstrual products or even safe toilets. Menstruation is as natural as the rising sun, and should not be a problem to be solved, but a reality to be respected. And yet, for millions of girls, women who menstruate around the world, periods are wrapped in shame, secrecy, and suffering. This year’s theme, “Together for a Period Friendly World,” calls for a world where menstruation is understood, supported, and dignified. A world where no girl is forced to stay home from school because they lack a sanitary pad. A world where no woman hides her stained cloth out of fear of ridicule. A world where period stigma no longer dictates how the female gender feels about their body. Creating a period-friendly world means more than handing out pads. It means education that reaches boys and girls alike. It means advocating for policies that make menstrual products affordable and accessible. It means fathers talking to their daughters without awkwardness. Teachers creating safe classrooms. Employers providing dignified menstrual support at workplace. Religious and community leaders using their platforms to normalize what is natural. Together, we can rewrite the story, together we can create a period-friendly world. Period.
