Menstrual Hygiene Day aims to raise awareness about the importance of menstrual hygiene management for women and girls worldwide. We have heard about the challenges surrounding menstrual hygiene, and they are vast. According to UNICEF , around 500 million women and girls globally lack adequate facilities for menstrual hygiene management. In low-income countries, 1 in 10 girls misses school during their menstrual cycle, which translates to an average of 20% of a school year lost due to menstruation. World Bank reports that in sub-Saharan Africa, only 37% of schools have access to adequate sanitation facilities, impacting girls' ability to manage their periods with dignity, while globally, only 66% of schools have usable and separate toilets for girls, making it difficult for many to manage their menstrual hygiene in a private and safe environment. We have also heard in some cultures, menstruation is still surrounded by myths and taboos. For instance, in some communitiescommunities we hear that women and girls are subjected to a practice that isolates them during their periods. There's therefore the need for Governments of the world to develop policies that ensure access to menstrual hygiene products and education. World leaders can follow Scotland's line, as Scotland became the first country in the world to provide free period products to anyone who needs them. Investing in better sanitation facilities in schools and public places to ensure privacy and safety for menstruating individuals is also very important, plus programs that educate both girls and boys to reduce stigma and promote understanding. Raising awareness and taking action on these issues not only support gender equality but also promote better health, education, and economic outcomes for communities worldwide. #calltoaction #worldmenstrualhygieneday #togetherforaperiodfriendlyworld #periodeducation #periodfriendlyinfrastructure #goodhealthandwellbeing #leavingnoonebehind #globalgoals
