*Adeleke Administration in trouble, asked by FG to refund N84b as party members are in disarray*
_10th June, 2025_
Similar to a man who embarked on a desperate mission to recover money owed to his father, only to encounter those owed by his own father, the Adelekes' administration woes began immediately after their contentious visit to President Bola Tinubu at his Bourdillon residence in Lagos during this last week. Barely on their arrival back to their home after the controversial visit that the Federal Government, at the instance of the same President they went to visit slammed their heads with its big hammer by asking them to refund to the local government a whopping N84billion.
*Go and Refund the N84billion you illegally collected- FG to Adeleke*
The Adelekes seemingly attempted to deceive their host, Mr. President, by playing a carrot and stick game. Prior to their Lagos visit, the Ademola Adeleke administration had filed a suit with the Supreme Court, requesting that the Federal Government of Tinubu through the Accountant General of the Federation pay the Federal Government Allocation funds for locall governments in Osun State for March, April, and May to the state. However, their request, disguised as an administrative necessity, backfired when the Federal Government in its response petitioned the Supreme Court to compel the Adeleke administration to refund approximately N84 billion to the state’s local government, citing illegal collection of funds over the past eight months for reason. “Ni Oro ba beyin yo”. Adeleke, like the metaphorical cow who walked on his own legs to the slaughter slab faces a delicate situation in which he will be asked to refund to the local government several billions of Naira deductible from source.
*”Sit-at-Home” / Caretaker Chairmen Remain illegal - FG*
As may be recalled, the Supreme Court had earlier last year July to be specific delivered a judgment granting financial autonomy to local governments. The ruling was specific in stating that any state lacking democratically elected local government officials as their charge de affairs was ineligible to receive federal government funds earmarked for local governments. Despite this, the Osun government accessed the funds for eight months without fulfilling the specified condition. Instead, it had a caretaker committee arrangement, which was not legally recognized.
*Fellow State Governors Express Frustration with Adeleke, Alleging His Tactlessness Has Created Problems for Them*
As things currently stand, sources report that the governor's actions have resulted in dissatisfaction not only among his party members and supporters, whose numbers are rapidly decreasing, but also among his fellow governors. They are reportedly unhappy about the governor's decision to appeal to the Supreme Court, thereby unnecessarily provoking the Federal Government, which had previously shown leniency by allowing them to still bypass the Supreme Court ruling and continue accessing local government funds. The other governors are currently nervous and on edge about what the outcome of his lawsuit may mean for them. A governor from the northern extraction expressed disappointment, highlighting the significant embarrassment caused by an individual's greed and poor strategic decision-making. "He should have consulted with us and we would have advised him accordingly and better. But he thinks he is wise when in fact he was not".
*Certainly Not The Best of Ileya Festivals for the Adelekes and Osun PDP*
It is no exaggeration to say that the Adelekes' Ileya festival did not go well. Over the past few weeks, their situation has been worsening. The party and its supporters have faced numerous setbacks. Key examples include the governor's explicit support for the APC Renewed Hope Agenda, the three PDP Senators representing the state pledging their support for the president, and the recognition of Osun APC Local Government chairmen for FG Allocation payments after completing the required paperwork.
*The leaked Information Concerning Meeting on Defection Plans of the “Sit-at-Home” chairmen to the opposition APC*
The final blow to the Osun PDP was the leak of information regarding a clandestine meeting between seventeen "sit-at-home" chairmen and opposition chieftains, which centered on their planned defection and integration into the APC-led local government councils, pending the approval of Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, who is currently abroad on official duty. Already, the defection is sealed. Only the sharing ratio and the harmonization of political offices is left. The defecting “sit-at-home” chairmen had pleaded passionately for their consideration for positions in order to be able to offset their losses in the PDP. They already had the ears of the APC leadership.
