*THAT SMARTPHONE IN YOUR HANDS...* For many years, I believed I was quite good at using a smartphone. I could make calls, send messages, chat on WhatsApp, browse the internet, post on Facebook, and even help others fix simple phone issues. I saw myself as someone who was already “tech-savvy,” especially for a priest. I thought I understood social media well enough. But over the past one year, something changed. I became more engaged and intentional with how I used social media and the internet. I started following pages that teach, inspire, and inform. I began to attend online workshops, webinars, and virtual meetings. I explored platforms I had ignored before, and I started creating content that helps people grow in faith and in life. That was when I made a surprising discovery: I actually knew very little. I realized I had only been using a small part of what my smartphone could do. There was a whole world of knowledge, tools, opportunities, and connections that I was not using. The smartphone I had carried around for years turned out to be more powerful than I ever imagined. This small device—often in our hands or pockets—can be a church, a library, a school, a microphone, and even a global mission field. I have seen people using their smartphones to evangelize, run businesses, study theology, connect with people across the world, and transform lives—right from their rooms. As a Catholic priest, I now see clearly how digital media can help us spread the Gospel, reach the lost, teach the faith, and touch hearts beyond the walls of the church. Yes, social media has its dangers, but when used wisely, it is a gift. A powerful one. The problem is that many of us still use our phones only for calls, chats, and entertainment. We scroll endlessly without purpose, post without thinking, and consume more than we create. We carry a powerful tool every day, but we do not tap into its full potential. So, what have I learned? That the smartphone is a tool—and like every tool, it can be used for good or for waste. The choice is ours. To my fellow priests, young people, and all people of goodwill: Let us be more intentional with how we use our phones. Let us learn, grow, teach, and inspire. Let us not be left behind in this digital age. There is so much we can do—right from the palm of our hand. May God give us wisdom to use this tool not only for connection, but for conversion. _© Fada Kumaga Fabian_
