Government has introduced an amendment to the Energy Sector Levy which will increase the cost of fuel by 1 CEDI per liter to help resolve DUMSOR. The Finance Minister says it will be used to pay debts owed IPPs who generate the power ECG distributes to our homes and businesses. The minority is however opposed, arguing that it is a reintroduction of the E-levy that was recently scrapped. ME: Why don’t we just call it Dumsor Levy or D-Levy? 🤔 I’m skeptical though of such levies that are introduced to clear legacy debts that are never cleared. There already exists an Energy Debt Recovery Levy in the petroleum price buildup.
