Rural Djibouti women benefit from AfDB-Funded Project GARIKAI MAFIRAKUREVA In the arid northern villages of Kalaf and Dafenaytou, where drought and poverty have long dictated daily life, a quiet revolution is unfolding. At its heart are rural women who, thanks to a regional project funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and implemented by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), are reclaiming their futures — with seeds, water, and self-reliance.
Assia Obakar Hassan, a mother from Kalaf, once believed that farming was beyond her reach. “Before, farming was an unattainable dream. Today, I feed my children from the land,” she said, her voice filled with pride. Her words reflect the transformation sweeping through parts of rural Djibouti, where secure access to land has become not just a legal right but a critical lifeline in the face of climate change. Supported by the Africa Climate Change Fund (ACCF), the project aims to build resilience in drought-prone communities by equipping families — especially women — with vegetable gardens, irrigation systems, drought-resistant seeds, and hands-on training. The results have been profound. “We had no right to land, no equipment, and no training.
