Revered Chief, educationist Nemashakwe dies ELLEN MLAMBO MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO – Revered educationist who was the current Chief Nemashakwe of Gutu, Clanous Devera Chirikure has died. Chirikure who is the father of prominent author and poet Chirikure Chirikure died at Mvurwi Hospital in Mashonaland Central at the age of 108. He died on May 14 and was buried at Chirikure Village in Nemashakwe on May 18, 2025. Chirikure Chirikure who is the eldest son confirmed the death to Masvingo Mirror. Chirikure who retired in 1992 after teaching at and heading several schools mainly in Gutu trained as a teacher at Waddilove in Marondera and completed the following year. Before teacher training, he briefly taught in 1945 and 1946. He taught at Alheit Mission in 1954 before being promoted to head Chitsa Primary the following year. After serving 14 years at Chitsa, he became head at Charumbira. In 1974, he was transferred to Domborenhikiti in Nyazvidzi and towards end of 1977, he was transferred to Vhunjere. At independence, Chirikure headed both Vhunjere Primary and Nemashakwe Secondary. He was installed as headman in 2009 and became substantive chief in 2022. He married in 1960 when he was head at Chitsa.
