The body of a Chief Bere village head, Taurai Lovemore Takawira allegedly assaulted and murdered by alleged Chief Fortune Charumbira's loyalists over boundary dispute has been at Masvingo Provincial Hospital mortuary for the last four years because Police has ordered Aleck Maunganidze, chief technician (Biology and Biochemistry) at NUST not to release DNA results. Takawira's relatives who belong to the newly reestablished Bere Chieftainship are accusing Police of trying to sweep the murder case under the carpet. One of the suspected murderers is Winterton Chirove, a Zanu PF activist who committed this crime just 5 months after serving a 18-year sentence for the murder of an MDC polling agent in 2002. The Takawira family wants to bury the body but Police and the murder suspects are arguing that the body does not belong to Takawira. They argue that Takawira fled to South Africa after being assaulted. The family is convinced from the clothes that Takawira was wearing on the fateful day that it is their relative's body. The family went further to pay for DNA tests at a cost of US$1 000 to prove that the body belongs to Takawira but ZRP has allegedly since put a lid on the results. Charumbira dissociated himself from the suspected murderers and said they were not his bodyguards. Police Spokesperson, Paul Nyathi is yet to comment on the matter.
