The OECS, as part of a Caribbean delegation, joined forces with the 🇪🇺 Delegation of the European Union to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean States, the OECS and CARICOM/CARIFORUM, 🇫🇷Expertise France, under the Euroclima Global Gateway, and the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, for an insightful day on the Global Gateway Study Tour on Offshore Renewable Energy. A key objective of the visit was to provide a unique learning opportunity for Caribbean senior technical officials, combining training modules, site visits in Las Canarias, 🇪🇸 Spain, and participation in the Seanergy Forum in Paris, France. The Study Tour, facilitated by Expertise France under the Global Gateway EUROCLIMA project kicked off in Gran Canaria - also Grand Canary Island - known for its black lava and white sand beaches but now positioned as a global leader for marine renewables including off- shore wind and green hydrogen. Participants saw firsthand the technological advances and ongoing research in this field from an island perspective providing applicable lessons for our region. 🌊 Judith Ephraim-Schmidt of the OECS Commission, Donna Gittens of EU Delegation, and Keisha Farnum of the CCREEE joined officials from Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Barbados, Bahamas and the Dominican Republic on a visit to the Technological Institute of the Canary Islands (ITC) in Pozo Izquierdo, where they were exposed to cutting-edge marine energy initiatives. The team learned of the Desalro 2.0 experimental platform, which uses seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination with super-high energy efficiency. This could be a game-changer for our water-scarce islands 🔋 providing fresh water whilst using less energy than normal desalination plants.
