In June 1995, Cambridge University's Institute of Astronomy (IoA) marked a significant occasion: the 80th birthday of its founder, Sir Fred Hoyle, one of the 20th century’s most influential astrophysicists. During his commemorative speech, Hoyle began by acknowledging his close collaborator, Professor Jayant Vishnu Narlikar, stating, "If I have seen further than others, it is by standing on the shoulders of Jayant." This was a remarkable tribute, especially considering Hoyle’s own towering reputation in cosmology and astrophysics. Jayant Narlikar, celebrated for co-developing the Hoyle–Narlikar theory of gravity, was a prodigious student and scientist. He was a Senior Wrangler at Cambridge—a title awarded to the top mathematics undergraduate at the University, a distinction shared by some of the greatest minds in mathematics. Narlikar completed his PhD under the supervision of Fred Hoyle and quickly gained international recognition for his work in theoretical astrophysics and cosmology. When Narlikar decided to return to India in the early 1970s, the Indian government recognized his exceptional talent and contributions to science by offering him significant support, including the establishment of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in Pune, where he served as the founding director for three consecutive terms (1988–2003). At just 27, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1965, one of India’s highest civilian honors, and later received the Padma Vibhushan in 2004 for his continued contributions to science. Beyond his scientific achievements, Narlikar was a passionate advocate for rational thought, scientific temper, and public communication of science. He authored numerous popular science books and articles in English and regional languages, inspiring generations of students and lay readers alike. His legacy as a pioneering astrophysicist, educator, and rationalist is unparalleled, and he remains a towering figure in the history of modern Indian science. There truly may never be another like Professor Jayant Narlikar—an intellectual giant whose impact transcended the boundaries of academia. #jayantnarlikar #hoylenarlikartheory
