*Over 93,000 Pilgrims Flock to Alba de Tormes for Rare Exposition of St. Teresa of Ávila’s Body*
Between May 11 and May 25, 2025, approximately 93,000 pilgrims visited Alba de Tormes, Spain, to venerate the body of St. Teresa of Ávila during a rare public exposition. This marked only the third time in four centuries that her remains were publicly displayed, with previous expositions occurring in 1760 and 1914. Following the event, the saint’s body was returned to its silver case in the Basilica of the Annunciation. Pope Francis’ canonical recognition of her remains helped pave the way for the exhibition. A scientific study revealed that her body is in an extraordinary state of preservation, though she may have suffered from osteoporosis and arthritis. A forensic reconstruction of her face was also completed using historical records and medical analysis. The Discalced Carmelites organized the event to bring pilgrims closer to Jesus Christ, evangelize visitors, and deepen knowledge of St. Teresa’s life.
