*Mathematics and Faith: A Pathway to Understanding God* At the 2025 annual conference of the Society of Catholic Scientists in Washington, D.C., Harvard professor Martin Nowak explored the connection between mathematics and faith. In his lecture, "Does Mathematics Lead Us to God?" Nowak argued that math serves as an argument for God's existence, referencing St. Augustine’s concept of divine illumination. He described mathematics as timeless and atemporal, noting that accepting this perspective moves one away from materialism and atheism. Math, he explained, offers meaning and understanding, much like love, allowing individuals to grasp deeper truths about themselves and the world. Nowak further emphasized that mathematics is beautiful because God is beautiful, portraying mathematical truths as reflections of divine thought. Though math cannot fully capture God, it serves as a reminder that humanity is eternal and not bound solely by time and space. His discussion gained particular interest due to recent attention on Pope Leo XIV’s mathematics degree from Villanova University. Ultimately, Nowak's perspective underscored how mathematics can deepen faith and spiritual awareness.
