MEPs have approved plans to increase tariffs on fertilisers and certain Russian and Belarusian agricultural goods to reduce EU dependency.
*With the measure, the EU also aims to cut a source of income for Russia that is contributing directly to their war against Ukraine.*
Products imported such as sugar, vinegar, flour and animal feed will be hit by a 50% tariff increase, no matter if they are imported directly or indirectly.
It is expected that these plans will also result in further diversification of EU fertiliser production, currently impacted by the low prices of imports.
If left unchecked, the situation could harm EU food security and leave the Union vulnerable to possible coercive measures by Russia.
