*It's World Peatlands Day!*
A *peatland is an area of land with layers of accumulated organic surface material in a state of decay* (known as peat). Peat develops in waterlogged conditions.
*Peatlands contain about 1/3 of all soil carbon* and are also a source of *nutritious food, medicinal plants and construction materials*.
But *they are threatened* by activities such as unsustainable agriculture, plantations and peat extraction.
By *restoring peatlands* we can:
✔️reduce fires and floods
✔️fight soil erosion and coastal area loss
✔️improve water quality
✔️sustain livelihoods
✔️reduce #ghg emissions
