#kenya: *2 OFFICERS INVOLVED IN THE ASSAULT AND SHOOTING OF A MASK HAWKER DETAINED FOR 15 DAYS* A Nairobi court has ordered the detention of police officers Masinde Barasa and Duncan Kiprono for 15 days as investigations continue into the shooting of hawker Boniface Kariuki during the June 17 protests. The two officers, captured on video allegedly shooting Kariuki at close range along Moi Avenue, were arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts on June 19. The court granted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) time to complete their probe. Kariuki, who was selling face masks, remains in critical condition at Kenyatta National Hospital’s ICU. The officers, both attached to Kileleshwa Police Station, have been interdicted and are facing possible charges related to assault and unlawful use of force. Their next court appearance is scheduled for July 3, when the court will review the progress of the investigation.
