#kenya: *SOFTWARE DEVELOPER AND CIVIC ACTIVIST, ROSE NJERI FREED*
Rose Njeri, the software developer and civic activist, has just been freed by a Nairobi court after facing cybercrime charges linked to her creation of a website that allowed Kenyans to email their views on the controversial 2025 Finance Bill.
Milimani Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo ruled that the charges, filed under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, were ambiguous, baseless, and failed to disclose any offence.
The court found the charge sheet defective and refused to admit it, effectively discharging her under constitutional provisions that protect the right to a fair trial.
Njeri had been arrested on May 30 following a police raid, and her case sparked national debate about digital rights and civic participation.
Her defense team included high-profile figures like Kalonzo Musyoka, Eric Theuri, and former Chief Justice David Maraga, who argued that she was simply enabling public engagement through a government-sanctioned email platform.
